Korea Institute for Industrial Economics and Trade is a leading think-tank of industrial economics and trade studies.

For over 40 years, KIET has supported the rapid industrialization and outward growth of the Korean economy through the analysis of economic trends and contribution to industrial policies.
  1. 11976-1982 : Early Stage
    KIET was originally founded as a public research institute on international economics to support the outward growth of the Korean economy

    • - 1976 : Established as the Korea Foundation for Middle East Studies (KFMES) after the first global oil shock

    • - 1977 : Reorganized as the Korea International Economic Institute (KIEI) by incorporating global economic issues and area studies
  2. 21982-1991 : Growth Stage
    KIET was newly established as an industrial studies institute combining research capacities in economics and information technology

    • - 1982 : Re-launched as Korea Institute for Industrial Economics and Technology (KIET) through the merger of Korea International Economic Institute (KIEI) and Korea Science and Technology Information Center (KORSTIC)

    • - 1984 : Renamed as the Korea Institute for Industrial Economics and Trade (KIET), with the opening of the semi-autonomous, affiliated Center for Industrial and Technical Information
  3. 31991-1999 : Structural Transformation
    KIET went through structural transformations responding to the advancement of the Korean economy

    • - 1991 : Separated the affiliated Center for Industrial and Technical Information and reorganized the main body with functional studies including Balanced Regional Development

    • - 1999 : Became affiliated with the National Research Council for Economics, Humanities and Social Sciences, an umbrella organization supervising all the public research institutes in the social science sector
  4. 42000-Present : Exploring Sustainable Growth
    With the rise of Korean economy as a major industrial producer, KIET is exploring the visions for the sustainable growth

    • - 2014 : Moved to Sejong City, a new administrative district southward out of Seoul. KIET is now preparing for a new era as a globally renowned industrial studies think-tank
