Technical Textile Development Strategies for Structural Upgrading of the Korean Textile Industry
The high value-added technical textile industry is creating new demand by replacing metal and plastic as a result of its improved performance by technological innovation. It is possible to create high-performance convergence textiles through the convergence with new technologies such as ICT, BT, NT and ET and supplier industries such as automotives, aircrafts, new energy facilities and sports goods. Consequently, the industry is significantly increasing its demand in global and domestic markets by diversifying its uses as intermediate products in supplier industries.
Accordingly, the developed countries including Japan, the US and the EU are planning to enhance technology development and invest in large-scale equipment in order to take control of the lead in the global market for technical textiles. China is constantly enhancing its quality level of technical textiles thanks to government-led R&D investment.
Thus, in order to cope with the catch-up by China and ensure the global market, which is dominated by developed countries, the Korean textile industry should promote its structural upgrading through the development of high-performance technical textiles, with its possibility of high technology innovation and high demand growth in global and domestic markets. To this end, the industry may need to foster high-performance technical textiles as the next generation growth engines.
This study aims to present the development strategies of the technical textile industry, which is expected to significantly increase its global and domestic demand and create high value-added for the structural upgrading of the Korean textile industry. Through this process, it is expected that the Korean textile industry will be able to create new jobs.
